Disney•Pixar Cars 2: Pit Crew Pals[3] was a Global Creative style designed for Kmart stores at the launch of Cars 2, with products by Mattel and other companies.

History

2011 "Power Packed Summer" program[1]

Kmart's Pit Crew Pals theming toplined their in-store retail deplays for Cars 2 merchandising,[1][2][5] and was marketed as part of their 2011 "Power Packed Summer" program, a Sweepstakes campaign supporting Cars 2 and three other theatrical films: Green Lantern, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Captain America: The First Avenger.[6][7] Participants between June 5—July 30 would have the opportunity to win prizes, among them a (non-exclusive) Tokyo Spinout Track Set.[6] Cars 2 defined the second of four promotional periods, leading between June 19 and July 2 – during this time, a "limited edition 3D print" starring Team Lightning McQueen could be collected after spending >$25 on Cars 2 merchandise.[4] The Pit Crew motif likewise featured in digital and in-store ads for the sixth Mattel Cars Collectors' Event, held on June 22.[8][9]

Neither Pit Crew Pals or "Power Packed Summer" elements featured in Kmart's 2011 toy catalogue, released November.[10]

Pit Crew 2-packs

An exclusive 2-pack assortment paired the mainline World Grand Prix racers with their respective, first-to-market crew chief. Their cardbacks are identical to those of the standard Cars 2 double sets, save only for the stuck-on "only at Kmart" symbol at the left-hand side.

In France, they were available instead as Carrefour exclusives.[11]

According to the Mattel Global Consumer Support product database, a fifth set (V5114) including Raoul ÇaRoule and crew chief Bruno Motoreau was also planned for release;[12] A June 2011 Take Five A Day article reported all five packs as being listed for pre-order on Kmart.com.[13]
