A Chase vehicle is a rare, limited-edition Cars vehicle produced in low quantities, typically as an exclusive, one-time mainline release; the term refers to collectors "chasing" after it. Markedly similar to the "Treasure Hunt" concept from sibling line Hot Wheels, Chase vehicles were brought over to the world of Cars in 2008, as the line first began to expand. On each of their cardbacks, a Chase was said to be limited to no more than 20,000 units created. Lead designer Martin Arriola worked closely with Cars director John Lasseter to integrate the traditional toy-car concept into the line; the two established a set of criteria that would distinguish these characters, dubbed "Lizzie's Law," after the eponymous postcard collector from the film. A Chase was a unique version of an existing cast, which would be distributed in exactly one assortment and never re-released - the idea "Once you go Chase you can never reappear again as Mainline."

History

In the original Cars line, one Chase vehicle was typically included every 1-2 assortment numbers. They also tended to follow certain "themes" as they released: The first two included Lightning McQueen and Fred with extra bumper stickers, while the 2009 mainline followed with "impounded" versions of McQueen and the Tuners gang, then re-releases with special packages, and so on. Arriola explained the "trick is to find some screen grab where that Character is different in some cool variant way."

The first 2009 Chases initially released with confetti drawn on both the cardback and blister plastic, increasing their novelty; This design only lasted for the first two Chases of that year (Impound Lightning McQueen and Impound Boost) before being phased out midway through production and packaging of Impound Snot Rod – the "confetti" variant of the latter was notoriously released in low numbers, and has sold for significant amounts online. All later Chases retained the traditional packaging until summer 2009, when the Cars mainline transitioned into the "Lenticular Eyes" series. As these assortments continued into 2010, fixed-eye Chase cars were initially released in lenticular assortments, but starting with The King with Metallic Finish, they were given the moving expressions.

Criteria

Though designer Martin Arriola fought to retain the criteria set forth by "Lizzie's Law," said rules gradually began to demonstrate considerable flexibility – often due to choices made at later stages of product development, like the marketing and shipping departments. Controversy sparked among collectors when Impound Lightning McQueen, the first Chase car of 2009 packed in the widely-circulated "A" assortment, received another release in box "H". The re-inclusion generated discussion over whether he was an intentional re-pack to rid leftover stock before the 20,000-unit cap, or if the original production run had already done so, making the advertised scarcity inaccurate.

Super Chase

In November 2011, Mattel unveiled a collection of brand new "Super Chase" prototypes as part of their From Silver Screen to Die-Cast: Disney-Pixar Cars Imagined by Mattel museum exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum. The "very special" releases were to be produced in even lower quantities than traditional Chase cars, capping at merely 4,000. The assorted characters were based on Cars 2 cameos made by celebrity drivers, each character having appeared in place of Jeff Gorvette in their respective country's version of the film. Also unlike usual Chases, while Super Chases were limited to one assortment number, they did not appear in every box manufactured - each release had a "duplicate" assortment, where they would be substituted with a different vehicle. The last of these however, Frosty, was distributed through a variety of unconventional means.
