Key Characters

The Key Characters assortment was a derivative of the mainline, introduced in 2014 alongside the respective diecast collection. Unlike the checklane or clipstrip branches, the Key Characters were seemingly designed less for impulse capitalization, than for the sake of providing multiple options to retailers: The title and yearly model selections appear to advertise a more concentrated version of the core lineup, focusing on the most recognizable and/or attention-grabbing characters. However, its exact purpose remains somewhat unclear -- official resources generally repeat the clipstrips' product description or ignore it altogether; meanwhile, until its discontinuation post-2022, the line was only known to be available in particular regions of South America.

Precursor

The overall concept for the line appears to have begun in 2011-12, with the respective Cars 2 "Porto Corsa" style series. The W2320 assortment^[1] features at least five vehicles in specially-cut blister packaging; each character is labeled with their English name and Korean translation. Likewise, the assortment appears to have been distributed in South Korea.^[2]

Four singles have been documented with standalone item codes, with the same updated "straight edge" packaging reflected on their 2012 mainline counterparts. McQueen-only cases may have been offered to retailers, similar to the Cars 3 Lightning McQueen standalone order (FTD36) issued in 2017.^[3]

History

Save item numbers, the first two years of Key Characters cardbacks are exactly identical to their international (Asst. W1938) counterparts. Some promotional images omit the "3+" recommendation above the Mattel logo in the upper left-hand corner of the card; in spite of this, all documented cards are known to include it.^[4]

In at least 2014, Mexico received—in some capacity—its own dedicated assortment (CFM58).^{[citation needed]} While the number and CARS SURTIDO MEXICO label were issued on price tags, the items themselves bear the regular CGK45.^[4]

Spring 2017

Only one case (956H) of Spring 2017 mainline cars was produced. It notably contains Mama Bernoulli (#6/8 in the WGP Fans collection), whose respective mainline release never shipped in either the US or international assortments: Key Characters is the only abridged assortment to have had this happen, and would do so again in 2019 with the blue-carded "Rust-eze Racing Center" release of Sterling.

Several characters retain their 2016 card designs (appearing in the same collections across both years) with the Cars: Daredevil Garage app banner removed – Max Schnell, Lightning McQueen, and Francesco Bernoulli however retain (erroneously) their 2016 set numbers.
