Cars: Monster Trucks
Cars: Monster Trucks is a 2012 art style depicting Lightning McQueen, Mater, and friends with 4x4 monster truck tires. Designed exclusively for Kmart stores, the titular product collection was accompanied by the Cars Ultimate vROOM Makeover program, a promotional sweepstakes where a grand-prize winner would receive an abundant collection of merchandise to "rebuild" their room around the world of Cars.[1]
Development
The CG character art and 2D vector sketches were assisted by Ideenhaus' Carboy Studio, a specially-developed program made to "strategically combine 3D creations and paint-overs" to maximize time and efficiency.[2] McQueen, Mater, and Raoul ÇaRoule's CG art poses were originally created for Cars 2 (2011); DJ, Snot Rod, and Wingo's for Cars (2006); and Boost's for Cars: Snow Drift (2010).
Kmart's makeover competition could be entered online; in addition to exclusive online content, a smaller prize included the "Rust Bucket Derby" book. The book may have inspired the Monster Trucks setting: The dirt track stadium backdrop seen in online ads greatly resembles the Rustbucket Stadium. The 4x4 concept itself had likewise been explored before this point, in all three THQ video games and Mattel's Mini Adventures vehicle line.
