Disney•Pixar Cars: Hot Rod is a Fall/Holiday 2013 art set and licensing guide.[1] As the title suggests, the theme involves modified cars, mainly Lightning McQueen and Mater. Outside a handful of toys and magazine appearances, the style set was not commonly seen in American merchandising, but was slightly more common on the international market—particularly Russia.[2]
Overview

Hot Rod presents its characters with powerful engines, exposed superchargers, and vibrant exhaust flames. Mater's "Funny Car"[3] design returns from its brief appearance in Cars 2, being one of many high-tech disguises offered by his spy computer; Veteran tuner and recurring rival Snot Rod requires few modifications, having already been designed as such for the original film. A new look for Lightning McQueen was created using older CG renders.[footnotes 1] This was done with contract help from Ideenhaus GmbH, who developed a digital program Carboy Studio specifically to ease manipulation and adaptation of existing 3D artwork.[4]
Despite the relative rarity of Hot Rod merchandise, Dickie Toys did release "RC Hot Rod" vehicles based on Mater and McQueen.[5] Both were modeled also by the Disney Store for their exclusive 1:43 die-cast range, released in 5-count "Hot Rodin' (sic) box sets alongside similar, unique renditions of characters not in the Hot Rod guide, namely Fillmore, Ramone, The King, and Chick Hicks.[6]
The word "custom" is prominent throughout the text supplementation—Several ideas and icons seemingly went on to inspire the Champions Custom Speed Shop, a real-life outlet opened at Cars Land.

Notes
- ↑ As implied by Ideenhaus' portfolio. It should be noted that the "base" McQueen pose in question has never been documented; It may have been created for Cars 2 (2011) or proceeding project, ultimately going unused prior to being repurposed for this program.
