The Desert Art Original Series was the first assemblage of Cars toys produced and distributed by Mattel. Having obtained exclusive merchandising rights from Pixar, the company launched its Cars brand in April 2006, ahead of the Cars film - they offered various brands of toy vehicles, from pullback cars and the trademarked "Rip Stick Racers" assortment to the core line of die-cast Character Cars that would quickly become the most popular and sought after of collection, and which has remained the "mainline" of their Cars brand ever since.
