Rip Clutchgoneski is a race car from New Rearendia.

History

Cars 2

In Cars 2, Rip Clutchgoneski participated in all three World Grand Prix races, as well as in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix. Because of his modest origin from an unknown country and of his lack of titles, Rip can be considered the rookie of the competition. Rip makes a cameo on the TV screen during the Mel Dorado Show when the racers formed the World Grand Prix logo. He didn't make a physical appearance until the Tokyo party where he and the other racers reacted to Mater causing a scene. The first race, in Tokyo, was Rip's best performance. He started from fifth position from the back (the best racers started at the back of the line for this race). Although in the first part of the race he was seen near the end of the pack, he gained places after the dirt section. He finally got up to the third position behind Lightning McQueen and Francesco Bernoulli, but then, had his motor blown out by the Lemons and was forced to quit the race, which he was one of the three cars that blew out during the race.

In the following races he stayed near or in the last position. Rip was recovered after the race in Tokyo and raced into 9th position in the Porto Corsa race in front of Jeff Gorvette and Lewis Hamilton. He was one of the last racers to crash in the huge pileup, at the same time as Raoul ÇaRoule. In the London race, Rip was seen in the last position. When the race starts in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix, Rip was pretty fast and raced into the 5th position. He was seen around the 4th or 7th position.

Other appearances

Rip appears in the Neon Racers book and takes part of the Neon race held by Shu Todoroki. In that book he says his only lines in the entire franchise. He also appears in the Ice Racers book. Rip also appears in Cars Daredevil Garage via his die-cast, which is so far, his only game appearance in any form.

General information

Livery

Rip is painted orange, with green and red wheel wells and red lines on his doors.

Model

Rip is a 2005 Formula 6000 Racer which is a fictional model. He is powered by a 3.5-liter DOHC V-8 with 650 horsepower, making this a typical Indycar engine. He can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 199 mph. Given that he is powered by a 650 HP 3.5 L V8 as well as taking into account some of his older concept designs, he is based on the 2007 Dallara IR-05 IndyCar, an open-wheel racer first introduced in 2005 by Dallara.

Behind the scenes

Concept art showing a slightly different paint job from the final one. Note the black wheel covers that match the Hulme CanAm of which he is inspired off of.

During a live promotional event at Pixar Weekend in 2011, Jay Ward explained that the idea of Rip's character came up later as they were discussing which racer was going to be killed off by the Lemons WGP camera. Jay Ward proposed to John Lasseter the following: "John, I got an idea. We make up an eleventh racer: totally fictitious, made up country, made up car, you won't even see him until he blows up and goes over the rail."[1] Additionally, the character was named Rip (for rest in peace) Clutchgoneski (for Clutch gone in the sky). This was later changed so Rip only suffered a blown engine, allowing him to continue racing.

Rip's vehicle model is an in-house design by Pixar and is not a direct copy or representation of a real race car. Although Rip's design borrows loose inspiration from formula-style road cars such as the Hulme CanAm and Caparo T1, Jay Ward stated this about Rip's car inspiration: "He's loosely based on this car, which is an Indianapolis, open-wheel style race car"[2], referring to the IndyCars that raced in the Indy 500. In a Q&A with character art director Jay Shuster, he clarified that they reused Francesco's model as base (primarily due to budget reasons and him being a background character), but again, he was heavily modified and "borrowed IndyCar shapes of that era"[3][4], also adding on to Rip's inspiration from Indy.

In regards to the Hulme CanAm, Hulme's developers reportedly saw this in an unfavorable light and found Rip so similar to their car, they considered making a legal action against Disney. However, Rip does differ from the Hulme CanAm by several design elements (IndyCar-like cockpit and air intake, different rear end, side vents, wider wheels etc.). Rip has the Hulme's characteristic orange color, and furthermore, concept art reveals he was first designed with black wheel covers, matching the Hulme car.

Other renders show that Rip had two different paint schemes, one in which he was orange-and-white along with his flag painted in a similar color scheme, and another where he featured a black, green, and orange paint job with his country flag also following this color scheme.

Bio and Statistics

  • The former European colony and newly independent Republic of New Rearendia is desperate to put their name on the map – the #10 open-wheeled racer Rip Clutchgoneski is their best bet. After putting together a remarkable string of qualifying races, Rip’s entry into the World Grand Prix is clearly the Cinderella story of the competition. Though Rip credits luck for his chance on the international stage, it’s really skill and exuberance that brought the proud New Rearendian racer to the starting line.

Trivia

  • Based on an old concept design (one that featured Fabrizio as an original WGP Racer), the cyan IndyCar was most likely the earlier adaption of Rip Clutchgoneski. The character was also female which suggest that Rip was initially thought of as a female racer similar to Raoul ÇaRoule.
  • His top speed is the same as the Hulme Supercar's top speed which is about 199 mph.
  • His Carbon Racer variant resembles a modified F3000 seen at modern Hill Climb events; specifically the Reynard 01L (K01) and Reynard K02. A few variations of the cars were given Formula E-like aero kits making them look like Rip Clutchgoneski although they don't have headlights and feature a wider spoiler.
  • Rip is the only racer that races for a fictional country.
  • According to the Cars: Character Encyclopedia book, Rip was actually meant to die during the first World Grand Prix race, hence his name Rip (for rest in peace) Clutchgoneski (for Clutch gone in the sky). However, his fate was changed so that he lived and only suffered a blown engine and was able to continue racing.
  • According to the essential guide for Cars 2, Rip's top speed is 240 mph/386 km/h. In actuality, Rip's top speed is 199 mph/321 km/h. Also in the guidebook it claims that his hometown is simply Rearendia, although, it is actually Wheeli. Oddly enough, this may have been an attempt to match his top speed with actual Indy race cars which can go anywhere between 230 to 240 mph.
  • For unknown reasons, Rip's WGP insignia shows his country's flag with colors in the opposite configuration (top left and bottom right section red instead of green) to all others flags and insignia appearing in the film.
  • Rip's 650 HP 3.5-liter DOHC V8 is an engine typically used by IndyCars from 2003-2011. In an earlier concept design of the WGP Racers, there was originally a cyan Indy car which was most likely the early adaption of Rip Clutchgoneski.
  • Rip's diecast version took one year after the movie to be revealed, and was the last of the World Grand Prix racers to receive a diecast.
  • He is the only World Grand Prix racer for which no turntable video has been made.
  • He is also the only one, along with Lewis Hamilton not to appear in Cars 2: The Video Game.
  • Rip's fenders on his die-cast model are bigger than in the movie.
  • His die-cast model coloring is also inaccurate as in the middle is shown be a bright yellowish-orange color instead of orange.
    • However, the prototype of him for his launcher shows the corrected color and Mattel later on did make him orange for his Carbon Racers release but didn't do the same for his normal release afterwards.
  • Rip is the only World Grand Prix racer to have never had any voiced roles in the franchise.
  • Despite him being the rookie of the competition, Rip is actually pretty fast; he was in fifth place in the first part of Tokyo, and the second part, he was in third until he was hit by the pulse generator. In Italy, he was in 10th place, behind Jeff Gorvette and Lewis Hamilton. Then, he drove ahead of them, along with Raoul ÇaRoule. Then after Shu Todoroki collided with Miguel Camino and Max Schnell, he was in 9th place. In London, he was in the last position. Despite that, he was between 4th and 7th place in the one in Radiator Springs.
  • Rip is the only racer in the World Grand Prix not to have a crew chief, just a pit crew consisting of some pitties. However, he does gain a crew chief in the form of a 1:55 scale die-cast character only who did not appear in the film.
    • Early concept renders of the World Grand Prix racers reveal that there were plans to give him a crew chief sporting the same model as Vic Vanley and Officer Murakarmi, but was dropped in the final product.[5]
  • Rip was the only WGP racer to not receive a silver racers die-cast. His diecast was planned, but in the end was cancelled.
  • In Toy Story: That Time Forgot, there is a toy car that bares resemblance to Rip.
