Miguel Camino is a minor character in who appears Cars 2. He is a Spanish race car who competes in the Grand Touring Sports 2 series with the number 5. In 2011, he participated in the World Grand Prix.

History

Cars 2

In Cars 2, Miguel is invited from Spain by Miles Axlerod to compete in his World Grand Prix series, in order to promote Allinol to the entire world. According to Brent Mustangburger and David Hobbscap, he has been really consistent, especially in technical turns. During the first race in Tokyo, he is the first to get his engine blown by the lemons' electromagnetic generator, which has been made in an attempt to show that Allinol, amongst other alternative fuel, is entirely dangerous, we can hear his gasps when his engine blown. He calls into the pits right away to retire, while his pit crew, led by Petro Cartalina and including one of his pitties, Honk Cho, investigate the issue.

At the second race in Porto Corsa, Miguel can be seen from from the 6th position. Later when the racers head down towards the hairpin, he is seen in the 10th position ahead of Rip Clutchgoneski. Miguel reappears in the race only to get into a tangle with Shu Todoroki, who has just had another engine failure also caused by an electromagnetic pulse. Max Schnell, who cannot stop in time, collides with the two of them, thus blocking the track on the bridge around the casino. With the racers' safety in jeopardy, Axlerod announces that the final race in London shall not require the use of Allinol. Therefore, Miguel chooses his own fuel for that race. When the race starts Miguel was seen in the 3rd position but after racing through the Admiralty Arch he dropped to 4th and was behind Lewis Hamilton. The race is soon abrupted by Mater comes onto the track with Lightning McQueen chasing him and later taking them both through the streets of London. Axlerod is soon revealed to be the mastermind of the lemons, and Miguel competes in the Radiator Springs Grand Prix with all the other World Grand Prix racers.

Cars 2: The Video Game

In Cars 2: The Video Game, Miguel makes an appearance as a playable character, unlocked by gaining access to Clearance Level 4.

Planes

In Planes, Miguel makes a brief cameo via a Porto Corsa vintage poster, that shows him, Francesco and Raoul, on Dusty's wall in his garage.

Cars: Fast as Lightning

In Cars: Fast as Lightning, Miguel is one of the racers who builds their own track at Radiator Springs to show how he can beat his rivals. He is unlocked after beating him as Boost, and in doing so, the player also unlocks his track and pit. He has four paint jobs available, those: Spanish Flag, Para España, ICE, and Neon Camino.

Physical description

According to Meet the Cars, Miguel is a 2007 Grand Touring Sports SS-E Racer which is an in-house design by Pixar. He is painted orangy yellow (amber), with various red, black, yellow, and orange patterns. He features a black Joan Miró-inspired star design next to his number "5". On his hood, he wears a design called "The Coat of arms of Spain", colored in red, black and orange. He has a large black spoiler with the World Grand Prix Logo, and chrome rims. His tires are Tok-Eo P215/65R15 89H, traction A, temperature A.

Character Design and Development

Concept Art

While there isn't much information about Miguel's development, an early concept design of the World Grand Prix Racers suggests he and Lewis Hamilton were not originally part of the story. Instead, there were plans to feature a Porsche GT1 based on the Porsche 911 (997 GT3 RSR) race car, and a Ferrari GT2 based on the Ferrari F430 race car.

Design Inspirations

In a Q&A with Cars 2's character art director, Jay Shuster, he explained that Miguel was inspired by multiple cars instead of being based on one car, specifically the Chevrolet Corvette C6-R (as Shuster stated Miguel's design was repurposed from the existing Corvette model), Nissan GT-R, and American muscle cars. While Shuster did not specify which American muscle cars contributed to Miguel's design, his shape towards the side has some resemblance with 2008 Chevrolet Camaro SS, while his spoiler resembles the one from the 1982-1992 Chevrolet Camaro Z28. In an early concept design of Miguel, his rear originally had a Ferrari light indicator, which may suggest that Ferrari may have been another inspiration at one point despite being relatively minor.

Shuster said the following: "Miguel has a few different inspirations- Corvette, GTR, American muscle cars of the time. I'm pretty sure Miguel was repurposed from the Corvette model we built. We did a lot of that for BG characters. But, specifically speaking, he was not based on one actual car". In a follow-up Q&A, he clarified this further: "Yes- Miguel was a modified Corvette. We had to fill out the BG characters as economically as possible if they didn't have speaking parts or featured heavily. I'm pretty confident we just messed around, pushing/pulling shapes to get it as not-corvette as possible".

Trivia

• Fernando Alonso, who appears in the Spanish version of Cars 2 in place of Jeff Gorvette in one scene, shares Miguel's model and nationality.
• For some reason, his Mattel die-cast has a red spoiler and yellow side windows, while his Disney Store diecast correctly has the black spoiler. As of 2024 it remains the inaccurate color.
  • However, it was corrected on his Neon Racers and Global Racers Cup releases.
• The essential guide for Cars 2 claims Miguel's top speed to be 175 mph/282 km/h, which is not the case as his top speed is the same as Lightning McQueen and Jeff Gorvette's, that being 200 mph/322 km/h.
• A vintage poster for Cars 2 showing Miguel, Raoul ÇaRoule and Francesco Bernoulli can be seen in Dusty Crophopper's garage from Planes.
• His name is a pun on the Chevrolet El Camino. Funnily and interestingly enough, his surname means "road" in Spanish, and such thing didn't officially exist in the universe until Andrew Vrooman from Cars 3.
  • In addition, the "SS" term from his vehicle model name "SS-E" stands for 'Super Sport', a performance option package offered by Chevrolet for car models such as the Chevy El Camino.
• His Polish name, "Miguel Alcantara", is a reference to the city Alcántara in Spain, in the province of Cáceres.
• His Para España, ICE and Neon paint jobs in Cars: Fast as Lightning are all based on the Silver Racers, Neon Racers and Ice Racers lines from the 1:55 scale die-cast line.
