Callsign "Delta" is or was a fighter jet serving VF-17, an aviation unit of the United States Navy best known as the Jolly Wrenches. Assigned modex 121, Delta's yellow-and-black helmet design closely resembles the modern standard of U.S.S. Dwight D. Flysenhower squadron members, with a unique pattern and name tag.
Behind the scenes
Introduced in Mattel's die-cast model series, a character matching "Delta"'s depiction does not actually appear in the base film Planes, as all Navy jets aboard the Flysenhower—apart from Echo and Bravo—wear generic, unmarked helmets and sport the carrier modex 113. In contrast to similar characters Tango and Yankee, Delta's yellow helmet with curved stripes is near identical to the generic design, meaning he potentially could appear in the distant background of certain wide-angle shots where multiple fighters line the deck. They otherwise could represent a downed or retired unit remembered in the ship's hall of fame, as several F/A-18E Super Hornets appear on what few segments of the black-and-white photo wall are discernible. While most toy incongruencies reference cut content or production material, an original design may also have been invented simply to give each jet further distinction than the source material allowed.
The CG cardback art is merely a re-color of Bravo's basic character pose, with the appropriate decals adjusted.
