The Disney•Pixar Cars NASCAR series is a crossover partnership between Cars and the American auto racing organization.[2] Launched in 2021, the collaboration centers around a collection of 1:55 scale die-casts produced by Disney•Pixar licensee Mattel, featuring new, original characters based on real-life NASCAR drivers, as well as existing Cars characters with inspired designs. Toys and social media promotions remain active with new content as of 2025.[3][4]
History
Disney•Pixar and Mattel unveiled the NASCAR collaboration on February 9, 2021, to kick off their third annual Cars Week promotion.[5] Pixar's official social media handles supported the marketing effort;[6] The official Pixar Cars YouTube channel uploaded an eight-minute episode of the channel's Talking Cars segment, interviewing and revealing the characters based on drivers Austin Dillon, William Byron, and Chase Elliott.[7] Further content throughout the week invited creative director Jay Ward to the Disney Parks social handles, where he showcased the new Lightning McQueen die-cast and shared trivia about the Racing Academy ride at Disney's Hollywood Studios.[8] Byron recorded a brief video for the Disney Music account, to promote an official Disney Pixar playlist.[9] The week concluded on Sunday, February 14, the day of the Daytona 500.[10] SportsCenter employee Ryan McGee wore a Goofy Mater-themed lapel pin during coverage.[11]
The die-cast cars themselves were said to be launching at Walmart stores between late February and early March.[12] Each model features a "fresh coat of paint"[13] and includes the new driver-inspired characters, as well as the franchise's "core characters" with "NASCAR-inspired designs".[14] More additions were reported to become available "throughout the year".[10] The second wave was released in approximately April 2021.[15][16]
Characters
Chase Elliot and Danny Suarez reprise their Cars 3 (2017) roles as Chase Racelott and Danny Swervez, respectively. New drivers and characters take on similar "Next Gen" designs, bearing legacy sponsors which did not feature in Cars 3, including Shifty Drug, Fiber Fuel, and Sidewall Shine (as well as Hostile Takeover Bank, Chick Hicks' former team).
