Giulia

Giulia is the secondary antagonist of the early versions of the 2011 animated Pixar's full-length animated film Cars 2, the sequel to Cars in the Cars franchise. She initially appears to be Mater's best friend, until it was revealed that she is a spy serving the Lemon Kingpin Zil.

Her role was later rewritten and replaced by Holley Shiftwell.

Production

In one of the earlier incarnations of Cars 2, Pixar had a character named Giulia who was basically a double agent; she connected with Mater, and the two of them later went off and had their own adventures and met up again with the other characters at the end. Secretly, she was working for Zil and was a double agent.

Biography

Not much is known about Giulia, but it has been revealed that early during the development of Cars 2, she was conceived as the secondary antagonist of the film and alongside Tomber, one of Zil's most trusted partners. Being apart of the Lemons, she is responsible for multiple character deaths, such as Leland being crushed and Rod being beaten to death, some of which she may have had a direct hand in. From what can be seen in concept art, She is modelled after an Alfa Romeo-like car, resembling an Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider.

Giulia first meets Mater in a village, presumably in Italy, and they immediately hit it off. She is the team McQueen handler, assisting them in moving from place to place during the WGP. Shortly after, Finn McMissile disguises himself as Giulia to lure Mater into the back carriage of a train headed across the alps to France.

During the race in Germany, where Mater leaves for the airport, he runs into Giulia, dragging her on a train headed towards Pamplona, Spain after spotting the lemons, causing her engine to overheat. He explains the situation to Giulia, who acts as though she doesn't believe him, until the two are chased through the train by Tomber. To escape Tomber, Mater presses the emergency stop button on the train, allowing him and Giulia to drive to Pamplona with Tomber right behind them. Since the running of the bulls is occurring, Giulia and Mater manage to lose Tomber in the crowd of bulls, but shortly after, Giulia gives away their location to the Lemons, enabling Zil to capture Mater, at which point it is revealed that Giulia is a double agent.

After assisting in capturing Mater, Giulia realises Mater was telling the truth about not really being a spy, and becomes sad when her and Zil are preparing to dunk Mater in molten lava, hinting that she has grown to genuinely care for Mater and perhaps regrets selling him out. She then goes on to rescue Mater from the lava and help him escape, although her role in the film after this is unknown.

It's unknown how her relationship with Zil and the other lemons are. As one piece of concept art shows her, with Zil and Tomber appearing happy at the Junkyard. Then again, all the possible information to find on this version of the film are pretty ambiguous in confirming the information.
