- "I'm Otto von Fassenbottom. The famous race car? I've come here to race. But there are no races yet."
- —Otto, Cars: Mater-National Championship
Otto von Fassenbottom[1] is a German Le Cars race car who visited Radiator Springs to train under Lightning McQueen and compete in the first ever Radiator Springs International. He quickly befriended McQueen, becoming his best pupil.[2] He later competed in the opening day stadium championship, joining his peers Gudmund, Koji, Emma, and Giovanni in finishing behind their mentor.
Biography

Upon arriving in Radiator Springs, Otto quickly found himself in trouble with the law: His noble 120 in a 25 earned him a speeding ticket from Sheriff, who had found himself dealing the same to many other international visitors.[1][3] Much to the officer's chagrin, Otto failed to understand the punishment (hailing from the no-limit culture of the German Autobahn) and instead autographed his tire print onto the form. Local celebrity Lightning McQueen happened upon the scene, and offered to take Otto for a drive around town. After a road race through North Willys Butte, the pair headed to Lizzie's Curio Shop so Otto could buy a souvenir for Jenny, his girlfriend back home.[4]

Otto continued to train with McQueen on the Radiator Springs Speedway, emerging as his best pupil[2] and competing in each practice race through the stadium's construction.[5] He gave the race car valuable practice, trailing immediately behind McQueen each time.[2] Otto frequently challenged both the other students and local drivers to races, nearly barreling into McQueen in the midst of a street race against Koji, Vince, and Sonny as the former crossed into Tailfin Pass.[6]
During the stadium's opening day events, Otto joined in a preliminary relay exhibition against McQueen and his friends, teaming with fellow trainees Gudmund and Giovanni.[5] He then took part in the official championship race, finishing behind his mentor.
General information
Though his make has never officially been stated, Otto's design closely resembles that of the real-life 2004 Audi A4 DTM[citation needed]. Early concept art depicts him closer to a Mercedes-Benz CLK coupé.[citation needed] Although his eye color is brown on artwork and in the PC version of Cars: Mater-National Championship, it is blue in all other versions of the game.
Back home, Otto spends his free moments cruising the Autobahn with his girlfriend, Jenny.

Trivia
- The Japanese tuner Manji in Tokyo Mater highly resembles Otto; as similar counterparts exist for Emma and Koji, it is possible the short takes place after the International arc, and the students inspired Mater's tall tale. Uniquely to Otto, the similarly German racer Max Schnell (introduced in Cars 2) also bears somewhat of resemblance.
