- In real life, the term "Handmade" refers to made by someone using their hands rather than by using a machine. This is an in-joke, as it implies Lightning McQueen was built by humans despite humans not existing in the Cars universe.
- Lightning McQueen's make and model suggests that he is a "One-of-a-kind Race Car", however several background racers in comics use his model.
- Lightning McQueen's design is inspired by NASCAR Generation 4 cars; however, he has a curvaceous body like that of the Ford GT40 and Dodge Viper. His exhaust pipes come from the 1970s Dodge Charger, but with four (two on each side) instead of two on one side or one on both sides. His body also draws cues from the design of the Chevrolet Corvette along with cab elements from a Porsche 964.
- The 2017 edition of Meet the Cars updated Lightning McQueen's model name to "2006 Custom-Built Piston Cup Racer."
