Cars + Star Wars

Cars + Star Wars is a merchandising crossover between Disney•Pixar and the American multimedia franchise created by George Lucas.[1] Created for Disney Theme Parks, the originally-produced 1:55 die-cast line envisions the primary Cars cast as the heroes and villains of the original Star Wars film trilogy: A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983). The range was announced in 2013 at a Star Wars Celebration press panel, closely following Disney's 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm.[2]
History

The first direct collaboration between Cars and Star Wars occurred in 2008, when a one-of-a-kind prototype piece – depicting Mater as the famous villain Darth Vader – was developed by the Mattel Action Play Entertainment Design Team, for auction at the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation (CAAF)'s Dream Halloween event.[3] A light-up diorama display presents the ~1:12[4] matte-finished statuette atop a "Death Star" panel aesthetic, its Black Acrylic base housing the electronics and themed sound clips recorded by Larry the Cable Guy. Both George Lucas and Cars director John Lasseter lend their autographs, while a plaque credits the designers and top Disney•Pixar personnel.
A commercial Cars + Star Wars merchandise collection was announced at the Star Wars Celebration VI event by Disney. The collection released die-casts and pins of seven Cars characters reimagined as some of the main Star Wars characters at the Star Wars Weekends 2013, that later became available at the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts. 2014 and 2015 saw the release of more characters.[5]
The franchise's separate elements interact in Disney Infinity: 3.0 Edition, the third Disney Infinity title launched in 2015.

While most secondary characters (such as the Jawas) are identified only as generic representation of their faction or group, certain designs appear to consider specific individuals – The Bespin Guard's mustache, for instance, resembles that of Helder Spinoza.

Much like the Cars Land die-cast, these are not manufactured by Mattel and instead credited only as "Disney Theme Parks Merchandise".
