Variants

A variant in the Mattel Cars line can be one of two things, both of which will be covered in this page. Character variants of a main diecast, like Cruisin' Lightning McQueen or Brand New Mater. These are considered variants of a characters main appearance like Lightning McQueen or Mater, due to their different designs. Country variants are slight variations of a vehicle, usually with minor differences, due to being produced in multiple countries where Cars items are manufactured (Formerly China, Currently Thailand and Vietnam) Chinese manufactured vehicles are usually regarded as the superior made ones, due to their clear decals and smooth rims. Thai produced vehicles now have blurier decals due to decals being applied with heat printing, as well as rims no longer being painted fully, often leaving a gravelly look. Thailand cars also have eyeplates instead of the eyes being a part of the main metal body like they were from China and Vietnam, as well as now having a thin black line under the eyelid to give the illusion of depth.
