Merchandise catalogs should include at least one reference for each and every item, to back any information provided. Given the sheer volume of Cars products dumped onto the earth, and the extensive nature of citations, expecting an academically-sound ID for each and every one would be absurd.

A {{tref}} (originally meaning toy ref, but applicable for any product) is a mostly one-note template providing a direct external link for the entered URL. That's it.

There is however a system of flags which can be used to communicate certain status or warnings, via |flag=. This will color-code the link to the following key:

Key Color Meaning
IRL [1] For any page lacking a real, in-person photograph of the item. This often happens when online listings (maybe with stock images) exist, giving significant info like product codes, but tracking down a second-hand source – where you'd usually get the same info, on top of confirming existence – is proving tricky.
MPN [2] For when the UPC from a second-hand listing leads to finding the MPN in something like UPCitemDB, but the reference does not itself provide that information. This is basically hoping for a better listing where all info can be seen at once.
